The eraser tool changes pixels to either the background color or to transparent.
eraser toolhas been dead for quite some time. We cover why you should not be using the eraser but rather use a much more robust and flexible tool:
A layer mask is used to hide portions of a layer and reveal portions of whatever layer is below it. You can modify the mask by using the brush tool and painting in either black or white.
