Levels is used to correct the tonal range and the color balance of an image. It does this by adjusting the intensity of the shadows, midtones, and highlights of your image.
The lighten blend mode looks at the color information of each channel and selects either the base color or the blend color, whichever is lighter. The result is that pixels darker than the blend color are replaced, and the pixels lighter than the blend color stay the same.
